This is a great replacement for your asbestos wick material.  It is a high temperature refractory rope, having a service operating temperature above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is flexible, 1/2 inch in diameter, and has about 38 strands total.  It cuts like fiberglass, is flexible, but will not glaze when left to burn out when the fuel runs dry. 

You can use it to pack valves, and steam chests. 

When I replaced the wicks in my Aster Reno, it took 28 to 32 strands per cup.  Very easy to cut, and handle.  No messing around with cutting and filing fire brick and all that dust, nor getting stuck with the sharp ends of wire cloth. 

There are no health hazards listed on the material safety data sheet.  However, be careful, and use safety precautions just like you would when installing fiberglass insulation in your house.

304 Stainless Steel Mesh Wick Material

304 Stainless is corrosion resistant.  This material comes in a 12 inch square size.  The mesh size is 80x80 per inch.  This should be enough material to outfit one alcohol fired live steam locomotive.  The material will be shipped folded in half and then rolled.  The shipping process may put some crimp in the material, which should not interfere with your cutting and folding to fit your wick cups.
